Have the AI tag every fact as sourced, worked out, unsure or unknown
An AI draft reads the same all the way through. The sentence with a source behind it and the one it smoothed over sound alike, so you end up checking the whole piece yourself, at which point writing it would have been quicker. Ask it to label as it goes. Every fact and every number gets one of four tags: published source, worked out from other figures, unsure, or don't know. A number with nothing behind it can only be "don't know", never a plausible-looking guess. At the end, have it collect everything tagged unsure or don't know into a list of what needs checking. Deal with that list before you read the draft. Pay particular attention to the ones it worked out for itself, since a calculation built on a wrong starting figure is the most convincing thing in the document. Strip the tags before anything goes out; they're notes to you, not part of the piece. What you're left with is a draft plus a short to-do, which is a different kind of work from hunting for mistakes in finished prose.
